Romantic comedy set in London in the late 16th century: Young playwright William Shakespeare struggles with his latest work 'Romeo and Ethel the Pirate's Daughter'. A great fan of Shakespeare's plays is young, wealthy Viola who is about to be married to the cold-hearted Lord Wessex, but constantly dreams of becoming an actress. Women were not allowed to act on stage at that time (female roles were played by men, too), but dressed up as a boy, Viola successfully auditions for the part of Romeo. Soon she and William are caught in a forbidden romance that provides rich inspiration for his play.

This goes to show what has become of the Oscars. "Shakespeare in Love" won Best Picture, where a DivX film Shakespeare in Love that easily could have been a TV movie: Shakespeare in Love of the week. A typical romantic comedy, like many others that have been seen before. And to think that Gwyneth Paltrow won the best actress Oscar .... even more of a disgrace. Ask yourself a favor and watch the Shakespeare in Love film "Emma" before seeing this, so you can see the vast difference between Gwyneth's remarkable performance in that Shakespeare in Love Drama film and its sad-excuse-of-a-performance in this film. That easily could have been someone cleaning in this DivX Movie Shakespeare in Love - which is how his life was. The costumes in this DVD movie Shakespeare in Love may have had enough colors, but they were too theatrical - which were more appropriate for a Broadway musical, not a Shakespeare in Love Drama film about the 16th century. Beautifully embroidered costumes in "Elizabeth" was much more deserving of an Oscar. Judi Dench and left with an Oscar for her 8 minutes on the screen? That was only 8 minutes of screen TIME, not 8 minutes of spoken words. Most times, just walking or sitting her, and she yawns. There were many other films that last year were more deserving of awards, something the Academy do not realize, and instead left it too generous.

Okay, so the picture is very nice to look at, but beyond that, it really is just one step in the factory of romantic movies. I can not see how people are making this Shakespeare in Love film to be brilliant. I am nineteen years, and maybe this DVD movie Shakespeare in Love only appeals to sixty years old (like the Oscar committee and most of the critics of Hollywood). Avoid this Shakespeare in Love Drama movie like the plague, because it is only average. I do not believe the hype.

For those who have "trod the boards," this is a wonderful film. For those who have not done much of the humor is over their heads. Much of the Academy has "done" by Shakespeare, it was "inside" jokes, of which there are many in this movie. The Academy appreciates this DivX film Shakespeare in Love more than the general public. This is one of my favorites of all time, which brings movies and crisp dialogue of Shakespeare and modern drama, while literary genius to conclude that it is Shakespeare. Congratulations to Tom Stoppard and John Madden, et al.
