1st seen 4/4/2004 - 5 of 10 (Dir-Mike Newell): formulas and teachers pleasant film: Mona Lisa Smile with Julia Roberts as a good teacher. The only difference between this and many other Mona Lisa Smile Drama film about a teacher who changes the lives of students for the better is that supposedly takes place in an all girls school (you can say "Dead Poets Soceity 'for women). Roberts is watchable as usual, but that's all. The stories of students is much more interesting, but not enough screen time is given for this and that is just getting surfacy Mona Lisa Smile film about life and love in the early 50's for girls. It is a shame because the subject, the changing role of women in society, seems to be given second place to the stars and their actions. It is possible that because I am a man, the story does not grab me as it should have, but I could not change sex only for this review. My best advice is to try and see if you like and if you disagree with me, but this is my interpretation of this "could have been a good film: Mona Lisa Smile that was not. |
Is it just me, or you have trouble empathizing with a group of club-bred society that somehow feel their privileged life are also the source of their oppression and misery? I can only think that the 1950s were not very different from today. If you are fortunate enough to attend an Ivy League school, is considered lucky because the rest of us can only dream of the American dream, while they live, they also have the privilege to criticize everything that is wrong with it. I guess we can be thankful for the Julia Roberts of the world who are committed to improving the lives of the privileged in the hope that goes down to the masses over time. This DVD movie Mona Lisa Smile is an example of some of my films pet peeves for example, why is it that when the main actor or actress arrived at work, are the last to arrive, as if it is almost lunchtime? Hollywood is either stupid or you think! |
