I remember seeing this Sands of Iwo Jima movie as a child and wondered if it seemed that the fight against antiseptic as Sands of Iwo Jima, Japanese soldiers then fell into one of the foxholes and Marines began bayoneting them. The stage I am still afraid, no matter how many times I've seen Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers. The great William Manchester wrote about being a Marine in the Pacific in his memoirs Goodbye, Darkness. He talked about how the DVD movie Sands of Iwo Jima was false, as John Wayne-ish Hollywoodized and portrays the type of in-your-face combat lived. He and a friend were thrown from a theater to laugh so hard in the histrionics and cliches. However, the average viewer would be hard not to feel pressured by John Wayne has been broken, non-alcoholic Marine-com, and the template commands. The best time of the Sands of Iwo Jima Romance movie is not tragic, inevitable ending, but the discovery of his Wayne's love interest is so damaged as painful as it is. With this in mind - and without prejudice to William Manchester - this is more than a war film, and that's why it's so good. |
I can not think of a better DVD movie Sands of Iwo Jima to see the Memorial Day. We see John Wayne at his best and see you die. Even the Duke is not indestructible. Wayne played Sergeant Stryker, a hard drinking, hard fighting that the Navy did his duty. He may not have been popular, but he has his men to the top of a rock. Clint Eastwood's version of this battle may be more beautiful, but to see the futility and dirt and grime of the war, it really can not beat this film. A great tribute to the Marines and the Duke, who has just turned 100 this weekend. |
I have seen this classic Sands of Iwo Jima Romance movie of John Wayne war many times, but only recently learned that three survivors of the original flag-raising (when the DivX film Sands of Iwo Jima was made) had cameo roles in it. Towards the end of the film, after the beach and Mount Suribachi secured, Sgt. Stryker brigade seeks to raise a flag. Stryker watching from behind, we see three young men sitting in front of him. Stryker hands an American flag and leads up to the summit of Mt. Suribachi and raise it. The three men play the roles they are: Rene A. Gagnon PFC, USMC, Ira H. PFC Hayes, USMC, and John H. PH3 Bradley, USN - three of the five original famous flag-raising captured in the Sands of Iwo Jima Romance in the famous scene from the top of Mt. Suribachi, and forever etched in stone at the Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. The other two were flag-raising shot and killed later in the island. |
After his wife and son he left, Sgt. John Stryker is an embittered man who takes his misery in the men under his command. They are a bunch of green recruits who have difficulty coping with the harsh Stryker drills and thicker skin. Even his old friends are beginning to wonder if it is moved from being the epitome of the Marine drill instructor to a hard man edge. The over the three men who were part of the flag-raising (made famous by Joe Rosenthal's picture had taken), and survived the battle for Iwo Jima was part of the DivX film Sands of Iwo Jima with John Wayne. Rene A. Gagnon, Ira H. And John H. Hayes Wayne Bradley are viewed as directed to hoist the flag (Wayne gave the folded flag Gagnon). This is a great war is unforgettable movie.John Wayne as the tough guy. |
As a retired Marine, I can say this Sands of Iwo Jima movie makes the Body of justice! After making through Vietnam and Desert Storm, I think I'm more qualified to make the observation that this Sands of Iwo Jima Romance film makes the body of justice! It is one of the few movies out there that you right in the gut while watching the fight footage. For those who have been there before the enemy and realize how accurate this film: Sands of Iwo Jima is really, after all, most of the combat footage is real combat footage from the camera men who were there. In short, if this Sands of Iwo Jima movie is guaranteed to give you a helluva "Gut Check! |
