A band of fairies and their human allies must save a primitive rain forest from destruction by a conscienceless logging company (not to mention an evil entity venomously expressed by Tim Curry). Although basically a dress Darwinian morality in the most delicious half of children's cartoons, FERNGULLY is really an entertaining and exciting animation masterpiece. Steeped in equal measures in Australia and the mythology of modern politics, this FernGully: The Last Rainforest film shows that the cartoons do not need to fall on anvils and wascally wabbits. Beware Robin Williams, which is always as much fun as a manic beats. |
I suppose one could see how innocent Ferngully guff for young (except for a sequence that more teenagers wet Crysta and Zak together), but see this 1992 FernGully: The Last Rainforest film from the perspective of 2005 looks more green propaganda for children. We learned that the technology (except for cassette tape players, which are fun) death and destruction, the spirits of the wise are recycled in life, the trees feel pain when cut, the research cruel to animals is carried out by timber companies and Gross are on the side of evil. These days you can pay a lot of money and learn all these things at university. I guess that was not too surprised when I read that this FernGully: The Last Rainforest Comedy film was released on Earth Day-Worship (Nature good - the bad man.) Robin Williams is funny as Batty the bat, better than the same routine of moving fast, which made for the genie from Aladdin (also 1992). |
I remember loving this when it first came out and I was only about 10 years old. I recently found a couple of books that I had saved the FernGully: The Last Rainforest film and I think back on this. I have not seen in years, but I just bought and can not help but love it. I love the pictures, colors and overall look of the film. And, of course, Robin Williams as Batty Koda was hilarious. In the description of human beings, "They walk around like 'Hello Helen!" "I love the message most of all, he does a good job of representing the greed and the destruction of our time through images, action and dialogue. I particularly like the way the fairy Crysta is so contact with nature and their feelings that can touch a tree and literally see the energy flow in it. It shows human resources, Zak, who, like all other human is out of tune with the nature and their feelings. Gradually, however, he also feels, and everything that was for someone to awaken him to it. That's all it takes for us, too. We needed something like this FernGully: The Last Rainforest film was done in order to wake some of us what we are doing. It may sound like a cliché or conference, but one that needs to be said and I am grateful to Ferngully and the people behind it believe that enough the message you are trying to convey. I read it out loud and clear. |
As is often the critical Ebert has a good and complete review. Simple story, the fairies live under the canopy of the jungle, in the belief that all humans have died. An early one flies above the deck, you see smoke and a mountain in the distance, almost becomes an eagle snack, and then goes on a mission to find out what is happening. She discovers the man destroying a rainforest next to the wood, which are represented as insensitive idiot blue collar slobs. His jungle Ferngully is coming and must find a way to stop it. With the help of some friends. The animation is very colorful and very good, and the vocal characterizations are well. The DVD picture and sound quality are fine, but the only extras are trailers for other films. |
